Antarra Communications and EMedia Magazine Surveys the Scene at M3/REPLItech North America

Situation: In 2002, the optical industry was been experiencing a slowdown in CD sales while overall demand for DVD products hadn’t quite begun. Entry level pricing for DVD-R, +RW and RAM were still high for the average consumer, and computer software and hardware had not yet fully implemented the change.

This scenario created conflicting opinions and confusion within the industry regarding the projected economic upturn, what the adoption rates would be, and how companies could best position themselves to take advantage of it.

Solution: The magazine wanted to update its research on changing consumer preferences, industry consolidation, the direction and the actions the optical industry was taking to perform in the current downturn. Emedia also wanted to poll the industry for new product innovations and marketing intelligence to better tailor their publication to these changing trends.

Antarra Communications, in conjunction with Emedia, devised a comprehensive survey for attendees and exhibitors during the REPLItech tradeshow, attendees and exhibitors were asked to participate in the survey. These included: Stamper Makers, Content and Duplication Services, Packaging Equipment Manufacturers and Service Providers, Media and Equipment Manufacturers, Duplicators, Replicators, VARs, Sales Reps, Distributors and Software Developers.

The goal was to facilitate professional discussion within the context of a formal, industry-wide survey. Both Antarra and E-Media personnel conducted the survey.

Results: The survey established the magazine as caring about industry developments, and demonstrated that Emedia is actively working alongside its advertisers and readers towards a solution. Interestingly, competitive publications at the show were very interested in receiving the results of the survey. One even admitted they wished they had thought of it! The show daily highlighted the survey with preliminary results published on the front page. Survey results were examined in the May issue of Emedia magazine. As a result the magazine acquired several new advertisers.
